Was born on October 21st. 1962
in Santos Lugares (Provincia de Buenos Aires, República Argentina).
He began to play the guitar in 1978.
Guillermo Bazzola is considered as one of the key names of the New Argentine
Jazz. He is highly respected not only as a guitarist, but also as a composer,
arranger, educator, and jazz journalist.
He is essentially self-taught, but studied harmony with Pedro Arturo Aguilar.
In 1989 was choose to participate in the "Tercer Seminario Internacional
de Jazz de Las Leñas", in Mendoza, Argentina, with Peter Sprague
as guitar instructor. Due to his performance there , he received the "Partners
of the Americas" scholarship. In 1990 went again to Las Leñas,
now as invited scholar. He attended clinics given by important musicians
like Jim Hall, Joe Diorio, Gary Burton, Greg Hopkins, Jack DeJohnette,
Walt Weiskopf, Mike Stern, John Stowell and Marc Copland. In February,
1995 travelled to New York and studied privately with John Abercrombie.
Played with the most significant players of the Argentine jazz scene,
and jammed with important players such as Hall, Diorio, Sprague, pianist
Don Pullen and bassists Victor Gaskin, Reginald Veal, Santi DeBriano and
Phil Bowler.
During 1994/95 played with trombonist Conrad Herwig, with whom toured
Buenos Aires, Bahía Blanca (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay).
In 1997 travelled to California invited by Partners of the Americas to
lecture about Argentine Music at the Schurr High School and the Cal State
University of Los Angeles.
On August 1998 played at the "Guitarras del Mundo" Festival
(Buenos Aires) forming a duet with guitarist Sid Jacobs. Later that year,
in October, was invited to play with his own quartet and in a duet with
pianist Ernesto Jodos at the II Jazz Festival Argentina-Brasil organized
by the General Consulate of Argentina of New York City.
On January 1999 formed the Summer Quartet. With this group recorded the
album "3D", that contains all original material. Later, on August,
backed American singer Jane Blackstone on her shows in Buenos Aires.
Guillermo divides his time in diverse activities such as playing his own
music, teaching, and working as an accompanist. Some of his compositions
were played and recorded by other artists like pianist Ernesto Jodos,
singer Eleonora Eubel and saxophonist Jorge Retamoza. Also wrote some
music for TV, such as the soundtrack of documentary film "Plantas
Medicinales, Volver al Origen" and the commercial for "Olimpíadas
Matemáticas 1997".
His articles about music were published by diverse media, such as "Página/12"
newspaper and magazines "CD Review", "Música &
CD", "Mix" and "La Contumancia" and "Revista
Clásica". He also directed the "Mensuario del Jazz Club".
Since November 2001, Bazzola is living in Madrid, Spain. During these
last years he played his music in different European cities like Barcelona,
Madrid, Amsterdam and Berlin. He also is a regular contributor to Spanish
magazine "Cuadernos de Jazz", and works as educator.
His new album, "Alas", released by BAU label, will be available
in March, 2003.
